A study on surface wave-induced mixing of transport flux residue and its application

Ocean mixing and its reasonable parameterization are of significant importance for modeling of the mixed layers. In this article, the role on the surface wave-induced mixing of transport flux residue is studied tentatively.Based on the decomposition scheme for surface waves, perturbations generated by the background current shear are derived, and the vertical mixing of wave transport flux residue is expressed analytically as a function of wave-number spectrum. The coefficients of wave transport flux residue are estimated roughly from simulated water temperature. Near strong currents, they have the order of 10-2-10-1 s-1 at surface, and attenuate to the order of 10-2-10-3 s-1 at 50m depth. Comparisons with or without the role of wave transport flux residue are performed and analyzed. Temperature transects indicate that the vertical mixing of wave transport flux residue can deepen the 24oC isothermal line and agrees to observation well. Distributions of the upper mixed layer depth also indicate that the vertical mixing plays an important role for formation of the upper mixed layer near strong currents.
