Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of 2024Al/SiCp Metal-matrix Composites Prepared by Powder Metallurgy Activated Sintering Technology

In this investigation, high density 2024Al/SiCp metal-matrix composites have been fabricated by powder metallurgy activated sintering technology.Loose powder by means of ultrasonic vibration, control of sintering atmosphere on pressureless sintering, the relative density of 99% or more of powder metallurgy of aluminium matrix composites can be obtained. The microstructure and SiC particulate performance of the 2024Al/ SiCp composites were investigated using optical morphology, scanning electronic microscopy, energy dispersive spectrometer and X-ray diffraction analysis.Microstructure characterization of the composites showed relative uniform reinforcement distribution and presence of minimal porosity.Meanwhile,The presence of submicron-SiC particulates assisted in improving the thermal stability,micro-hardness,elastic modulus and 0.2% yield strength. Both of the 0.2% yield strength and ultimate tensile strength increased with the increasing of SiC particulate content, however, decreased as the SiC particulate content overrun 25 vol.%.
