Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Al-TiB2 Metal-matrix Composites Prepared under High-intensity Ultrasound

Al-TiB2 metal-matrix composites have been fabricated with an exothermic reaction process under high-intensity ultrasound using K2TiF6 and KBF4 salts. In this approach, the microstructure and grain refining performance of the Al-TiB2 composites were investigated using optical morphology, scanning electronic microscopy, energy dispersive spectrometer and X-ray diffraction analysis.Microstructure observation showed a decreasing trend in grain size of the composites due to ultrasound and the increasing weight percentage of TiB2 particles in the composites.Compared to the process without ultrasound, the morphology and the agglomeration of TiB2 particles were improved under high-intensity ultrasound.Meanwhile,it was proposed that the formation of TiB2 particles occurred via transformation from TiAl3.When TiB2 particles accounted for 7.5% (mass fraction),the transfer efficiency almost reached up to 100%.Finally,the effects of high-intensity ultrasound and TiB2 particles on the mechanical properties of the Al-TiB2 composites were also discussed.
