Flow-Induced Dilation of Wetted Granular Materials

Understanding and describing the flowing properties of wetted granular materials has been a hotspot and conundrum in the research of granular dynamics.This paper investigates flowing properties of wetted granular in the rotating drum,and quantitatively analysis dilation effect of wetted granular.Results show: (1) For the same type of granular material,dilation ratio increased with the water content,but there will be a saturation effect when the water content reach about 3%;(2) Under the same water content,the larger of granular size d,the lower of dilation ratio D,and the averaged dilation ratio (D) will decline with d:(D)adb;(3) Dilation mechanism of wetted granular may be: the addition of water enhance the build-bridge effect which enhance the cohesion,and shearing of the drum leads to larger grain clusters that augment the void of the whole granular system,which would macroscopically exhibit as dilation of granular volume.
