An in situ Study on Sintering NiTi Shape Memory Alloy From TiH2 Powder

The use of TiH2 powder in synthesizing titanium and titanium alloys has received increasing interest in recent years. It is claimed that the most prominent effect of TiH2 is the cleansing ability of hydrogen released during dehydrogenation-sintering process, which significantly promotes powder densification. This study presents an in situ observation of blended elemental powders sintering, using an environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM).Densification and microstructure of the as-sintered NiTi alloy is reported. It is found that the release of hydrogen causes TiH2 powder fragmentation, separation of powder contact and hence porosity increase. In other words, the use of TiH2 powder does not promote densification under normal sintering conditions. The sintering mechanism and compressive properties of sintered NiTi alloys are compared involving TiH2 use.
