SCCmec:A Mobile Genetic Element in MRSA from Saccharides
As the discovery and application of methicillin,methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics is considered to be a potential ”Super Bugs”.MRSA is one of the major infectious pathogen which poses a challenge to hospital infection control. The mobile genetic element Staphylococcal chromosomal cassettes mec (SCCmec) in MRSA carried mecA gene which encoding a novel specific penicillin-binding protein (PBP2a) and site-specific recombinase genes ccrA and ccrB.In MRSA,the insertion of SCCmec leads to the acquisition of the resistance to β-1actam antibiotic.A thorough understanding of the antimicrobial resistant characteristics, molecular epidemiology and evolution of MRSA which mainly included the prevalence and structure characteristics of mobile genetic element SCCmec is required to help detect, control and prevent human disease caused by MRSA.This review aimed at describing the history, the prevalence, types and subtypes, and the typing method of SCCmec currently, with the focus on the typical structures of SCCmec.
