Rhein, a natural anthraquinone derivative, ameliorates pancreatic fibrosis in a mouse model of cerulein-induced chronic pancreatitis
Anthraquinone possesses diverse biological properties including anti-inflammatory bioactivities. In cerulein-treated mice, application of Rhein (50 mg/kg/day)significantly ameliorated the severity of chronic pancreatitis and the associated fibrogenesis.Pro-inflammatory cytokines and pro-fibrotic mediators were remarkably lowered by the prolonged oral administration of Rhein.Besides anti-inflammatory activities, Rhein actually exerts strong anti-fibrotic properties against the over-production of extracellular matrix and provides effective inhibitory effect on the activation of pancreatic stellate cells.Significance: Rhein has therapeutic potential for the clinical management of pancreatic fibrosis as well as pancreatic stellate cell-related pathologies.
