Thoroughbred Breeding in Korea

Horse racing in Korea began in 1922 and during those times most of racehorse were imported.In 1991 the Korean government approved ”The mid long term plan for the supply of domestic-bred racehorses” Which was the beginning of Thoroughbred breeding in Korea.Thirty seven private farms participated in Thoroughbred breeding in 1992 and 87 broodmares were imported from USA in 1993 The KRA”s Juju stud farm and training center was opened in 1995 and it caused breeding to expand greatly.In 2015,244 farms including KRA”s 2 farms are operated in the breeding field.185 farms are located in JeJu due to the mild climate and good grass,KRA”s farm only manages stallions.Until the year 1999only the KRA had owned stallions,Private farms begun to stallions since 2000.108 stallions are registered now,13 horses are owned by KRA and 95 by private farms.57 horses among them are imported and 51of them are retired horses from racing in Korea.The total number of registered broodmares was 2,576as of September 2015.Of these 82.7% horses were owned private farms in Jeju.Korean breeders have imported broodmare since 1993.48.6% horses are imported and 51% are retired racehorses.
