Prevention of Virus Disease in Equine Breeding Stock
Equine viruses are a major cause of concern for horse breeders all over the world.Every year breeders suffer financial loss due to abortion and foal diarrhoea that could be reduced by a combination of vaccination and the introduction of certain management procedures.HERPESVIRUS ABORTION Vaccination of the pregnant mare is essential to protect her against virus-induced abortion and to ensure that her foal is healthy. Both Equine Herpesviruses 1 and 4 (EHV-1 and EHV-4) viruses are associated with sporadic single abortions but EHV-1 is also associated with multiple abortions. In abortion storms due to EHV-1 farms have lost up to 80% of their pregnancies. The risk of this occurring can be minimised by vaccinating all pregnant mares, usually at 5,7 and 9 months of pregnancy.
