Control of equine herpesvirus type 1 (EHV-1)and influenza virus infections
Equine herpesvirus type 1 (EHV-1) causes a triad of clinical syndromes and is characterized by respiratory, reproductive and neurological disease.Arguably,EHV-l-induced abortions, classically in an endemic form (abortions storms) still are the most important clinical presentation. In recent years, the pathogenesis of abortion and EHV-1 myeloencephalopathy (EHM) has been the focus of our research.Abortion and EHM are a consequence of endothelial cell infection and subsequent thrombus formation and infarction. We will present data on individual viral factors involved in disease induction and progression and how knowledge of these factors can help identify targets for prevention and treatment. In the context of outbreak investigations,we will discuss novel approaches for vaccine development and treatment options that include the generation and testing of recombinant modified live virus vaccines.
