Tissue engineering for treatment of equine bone and cartilage diseases
Bone and articular cartilage diseases such as fractures and osteochondritis frequently occur in horses, and the healing period is a major clinical problem. Therefore, shortening the healing period is required, and tissue engineering is expected.Tissue engineering induces bone and cartilage regeneration using three factors:viable cells;growth factors that induce proliferation and differentiation;and scaffolds for cell adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation. However, growth factors have a very short biological half-life.Thus,drug delivery systems (DDSs) are required for effective growth factor application.
