Vitamin K: Importance beyond Coagulation in Horses
Vitamin K was discovered in 1935 as a dietary factor needed to cure a hemorrhagic condition that developed in chicks fed low lipid diets.Vitamin K (VK) consists of a group of structurally related compounds all of which have a 2-methyl-1,4-naphthoquinone ring system and differ in the structure of their isoprenoid side chain at the 3-position.The two naturally occurring classes of VK are phylloquinone (K1),which is synthesized by plants, and the menaquinones (MKs also known as K2),which are synthesized by intestinal bacteria.
