Research progress on spermatogonial stem cells
Spermatogonial stem cells(Spermatogonial stem cells,SSCs) have self-renewal ability,and can differentiate into sperms.They are the only adult stem cells in male animals can transmit genetic information to offspring.It originated from the primordial germ cells of early embryonic and expressed some relatively specific molecular markers.Various cytokines,molecules secreted by SSCs niche (GDNF,Plzf,Taf4b,SCF/c-Kit,etc) regulate the proliferation and differentiation of SSCs.SSCs have a broad application prospect in the future treatment of male infertility.The difficulty lies in how to successfully construct in vitro culture system inducing SSCs into sperms.Numerous studies have demonstrated that traditional Chinese medicine(traditional Chinese medicine,TCM) can induce stem cells to differentiate into a variety of somatic cells.Therefore,we may consider to use TCM to induce differentiation of SSCs in future studies.It also opens up a new research field to study the mechanism of TCM treatment for male infertility.
