Experimental investigation on drag coefficient for a Truss Spar subjected to vortex induced motions
Drag coefficient of a bluff body is a crucial parameter for studying fluid-structure interaction topics. It characterizes the magnitude of drag force on the structure. The larger the drag coefficient is, the larger distance the structure is away from its initial position. Thus it is very important in designing the Truss Spar. And the existence of vortex-induced motion (VIM) often exaggerates the drag coefficient. The 1∶60 scale Truss Spar model tests have been conducted in towing tank at Zhejiang Ocean University (ZOU).The Truss Spar model consists of a hard tank with removable helical strakes, a truss section and a square soft tank.Drag coefficients for both stationary and vibrating Truss Spar were carefully investigated. The current flow is uniform in all test cases and the Reynolds number is from 7E04 to 2E05.It was found that the drag coefficient of vibrating Truss Spar is obviously larger than that of stationary Truss Spar, and the drag coefficient of the Truss Spar with strakes is larger than that of the Truss Spar without strakes. And the drag coefficient is also affected by current headings.
