Coronary artery plaque composition by virtual histology intravascular ultrasound analysis and fractional flow reserve in patients with intermediate coronary stenosis in left anterior descending artery
Background The optimal modality to guide accurate, safe and effective coronary intervention should be able to identify both vulnerable plaques and ischemia-producing lesions.Virtual histology intravascular ultrasound (VH-IVUS)has been developed to identify vulnerable plaques by assessment of plaque composition, while fractional flow reserve(FFR) has been accepted for a standard method to evaluate the functional significance of a coronary lesion. However, there is no evidence to date that VH-IVUS parameters and FFR values are correlated with each other. The present study aimed to examine the potential correlation between the two modalities in intermediate coronary lesions, and evaluate the role of FFR in identification of vulnerable plaques.
