Impact of smoking and smoking cessation on intimal coverage after stent implantation: a retrospective study of optical coherence tomography
Background Cigarette smoking is an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease.Animal study found that cigarette smoking accelerates carotid artery intimal hyperplasia in a dose-dependent manner.The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between smoking and intimal hyperplasia after stenting.Methods From May 2008 to May 2012, the patients underwent optical coherence tomography imaging 12 months after sirolimus-eluting stent (SES) implantation at our center were included.Eligible patients were classified as current smokers, former smokers and never smokers.Former smokers were categorized into <5 years, and ≥5 years of smoking cessation.
