MicroRNA-21 mediates the apoptosis of endothelial cells induced by rapamycin
Background Rapamycin (sirolimus) is widely used in drug eluting stent (DES) in order to prevent in-stent restenosis(ISR) after percutaneous coronary intervention. However, rapamycin can inhibit the proliferation and migration of vascular endothelial cells, promoting the apoptosis, and leads to a delayed reendothelialization of stent struts.MicroRNAs (miRNAs, miRs) are a class of endogenous small non-coding RNAs at lengths of about 19-22 nt.MiRs can widely regulate gene expression at post-trascriptional level mostly by targeting 3-UTR of mRNAs.Here, we investigated whether miRs have a potential effect on rapamycin induced apoptosis of endothelial cells.
