Two-year clinical outcomes after implantation of sirolimus-eluting stents in patients with coronary artery disease and type 2 diabetes

Background Drug-eluting stents (DES) have been shown to significantly reduce clinical events and angiographic restenosis in the treatment of coronary artery disease (CAD).We aimed to assess the long-term efficacy and safety of two Sirolimus-Eluting Stents (the biodegradable polymer-coated sirolimus-eluting stents, EXCEL and the polymer-based sirolimus-eluting cobalt-chromium stents, Firebird 2) in the treatment of patients with CAD and Type 2 Diabetes. Methods A total of 320 consecutive patients with coronary artery disease and type 2 diabetes undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention randomized into two groups (EXCEL group, n=158; Firebird 2 group, n=162).Baseline clinical characteristics, procedural success rate and occurrence of major adverse cardiac events (MACE, a composite of death, myocardial infarction or target lesion revascularization) during follow-up were recorded and compared between the two groups.
