Establishment of a canine model of patent foramen ovale
Background Foramen ovale is an interatrial communication that is needed during the life of the fetus as it facilitates the passage of umbilical vein blood from the right atrium to the left atrium to maintain the fetal circulatory system.The possible association of PFO with cryptogenic stroke, transient ischemic attack, migraine,decompression sickness in divers, platypneaorthodeoxia syndrome, or mountain sickness has been reported.In patients with clinical signs and symptoms of PFO,percutaneous closure could be considered the treatment of choice for those receiving surgical and medical treatment.Many devices have been used for percutaneous PFO closure: the Amplatzer device is one of the most frequently used with in percutaneous treatment, with large amount of devices used, significant results and fewer complications.To investigate the feasibility of establishing animal model of patent foramen ovale in dogs by percutaneous atrial septal puncture and balloon dilation.
