Probucol inhibits vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation via up-regulation of KLF4 after balloon injure of rat carotid arteries

Background Vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) proliferation contributes to intimal thickening in restenosis and atherosclerosis.Evidence suggests that induction of transcription factors, Kr(u)ippel-like factor 4 (KLF4) inhibits proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells.Previously studies demonstrated that treatment with probucol, a potent antioxidant agent has been shown to reduce restenosis after balloon angioplasty, although its underlying mechanism remains unclear. In this study, we aimed to explore the molecule mechanism that probucol reduce restenosis after ballooninjure and whether KLF4 is involved in modulation of VSMCs after probucol intervented.
