Beef Cattle Production in Japan

Until around 1945, cattle in Japan were often used for farming, supplying draft labor and fertilizer to increase rice yields, and as a source of meat for human consumption. However, with the progression of agricultural mechanization since 1950, the principle function of cattle has changed solely to meat production. At the same time, the Japanese Black cattle breed has been improved to provide high levels of marbling and high weight gains for meat production. As a result of the concerted efforts of several scientists and the government,Japanese Black Cattle are now renowned for excellent meat production and meat quality. This article outlines the current situation of the production of beef cattle, including high quality breeds such as the Japanese Black, and the application of growth hormone (GH) SNP in Japanese Black cattle in Japan.
