Pb(Ⅱ) and Zn(Ⅱ) biosorption by living B35 biomass: Kinetics, EDX,FTIR and simultaneous biodegradation studies

The biosorption of living B35 biomass (a mixture of various microorganisms) for Pb(II) and Zn(II) was studied.Parameters including biomass dosage, initial metal concentration, and contact time were investigated. The pseudo-second-order model is more suitable for describing the biosorption process of Pb(Ⅱ) and Zn(Ⅱ) by B35 than the pseudo-first-order model.EDX and FTIR were used to determine the interaction between the biosorbent and the heavy metals. The intensity of Na and Ca peak in the EDX spectra decreases after biosorption, suggesting that the ion exchange process is involved. The FTIR spectra indicate that the hydroxyl, amine, carboxyl and phosphate groups may play an important role in the biosorption by complexation process. The capability of B35 to simultaneously adsorb heavy metals and biodegrade m-cresol was confirmed by treating the synthetic complex wastewater.
