Genomic Insights into Innate Immunity in Cattle
Many of the 25-30,000 genes and much of the 2.5-3.0 billion bp of DNA in mammalian genomes play a role in acquired and innate immunity. The best studied immune genes have historically been those for immunoglobulins, T-cell receptors and the major histocompatibility complex. There are probably at least a thousand other genes, however, that could affect individual differences in the response of cattle hosts to viral, bacterial, or parasitic infections.More than 100 of these are now documented by publications from a variety of human studies.
