Assessment of Paired Box 7 Gene (Pax7) Polymorphisms as Markers of Growth Traits in Chinese Beef Cattle

The objectives of this study were to detect single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of Paired box 7 (Pax7) gene in 1226 beef cattle from five Chinese indigenous breeds, and investigate their effects on growth traits.Four novel SNPs were identified, including three synonymous mutations(NC_007300∶ g.3531G>A, g.56626G>A and g.66117C>T) and one intron mutation (g.66251A>G),which were detected by Hinf1, BspT1041, PstI, and ApaI PCR-RFLP, respectively.Association analysis showed genotypes of Hinf1 and ApaI loci showed significant effects on body weight and average daily gain of cattle aged 6 months, and PstI genotypes significantly affected chest girth of cattle aged 6 and12 months (P<0.05).When combining, significant associations were also found, and the diplotype BH (AGTCAG) had better body weight and average daily gain than others (P<0.05).All these findings show that Pax7 gene may be used as molecular marker in marker-assisted selection (MAS) programs for the beef cattle breeding.
