Forage-based Beef Cattle Production in Red Soils Region of Southern China
The red soils region of southern China belongs to the subtropical monsoon climate which characterized by sufficient solar radiation, abundant heat and plentiful rainfall and the four seasons are distinctive, all these contribute to agricultural production, especially to the development of forage;in the raining time, high level precipitation and unsuitable cultural method resulted in the erosion of soil and water. In this area, there are 6667 × 104hm2 barrens and hills, 2000× 104hm2 underdeveloped orchards and2000×104hm2 un-cultivable fields in winter and autumn available for beef cattle production together with the abundant crop by-products.The above resources laid a solid base for the development of forage-based beef cattle production.Poor quality in native grass and crop stalk, imbalance in the provision of diet annually, lack of the integrated technologies of raising beef cattle with forage and crop by-products resulted in a slow development of forage-based beef cattle in southern China, so, the aim of this work is to get some practical techniques to move the forage-based beef cattle production to a higher level.
