China”s Path to Realizing its E-commerce Potential in the Information Age:An Overview

1.Introduction This paper presents an overview of China”s potential and progress in moving from a,developing country in an Industrial Age to a developed country and full participant in an Information Age.2 The main message is that China, as the number one exporter and number two importer in the world, with the second largest economy, with almost 600 million people connected to the Internet and with over a billion mobile phones, e-commerce potential is huge and rising.ST he Chinese government has properly seen e-commerce development within a larger framework of innovation.Further, it has recognized that for e-commerce to prosper government must play a lead role in developing the infrastructure, including legal reforms, that will enable this e-commerce potential to be fully realized.4
