The Future of Passenger Car Engine Lubrication in China Providing Efficiency and Protection for Tomorrow” s Engines

China” s passenger car market continues to see impressive growth.Improvements to fuel economy and exhaust emissions have a very high priority, leading to the imposition of increasingly strict regulatory limits in both areas.Engine technology from domestic and foreign original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) is rapidly evolving to meet the challenges resulting from these regulations. The major technology employed to improve performance in China is the use of downsized, turbocharged gasoline direct injection (TGDI) engines. These engines are very efficient but bring some unique requirements for the engine oil.New, high performance engine oils can enable these improvements. They contribute directly to fuel economy by reducing frictional losses, and also indirectly by protecting the engine and enabling it to operate cleanly and efficiently for a longer lifetime.New formulating approaches are being adopted to address the unique issues of TGDI engine lubrication. This paper sets out some of the key requirements for engine oils to meet the many challenges involved when combining efficiency with lower emissions whilst offering excellent protection for advanced engine hardware. An overview of some of Lubrizol” s advanced additive systems is given, together with details of some of the leading-edge test techniques used to develop and prove the performance of these systems.
