The Driving Force of the University in Promoting Regional Development
European Union is confronted by economic crisis, employment (especially young people), changing demographics (aging), the emergence of foreign competitors (like China, Russia, Japan, BRICS) and also new technologies and modes of working. In order to face these challenges, ”the modernization of HEIs is absolutely crucial in producing critically-thinking,creative and adaptable graduates” (Adroulla Vassiliou, Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth) which will shape and define the future.Nowadays, teaching and learning process must be viewed in a wider and more comprehensive approach, that underline the quality in producing and delivering of relevant, up to date knowledge and skills, that are globally connected and suitable with the labour market”demands. This paper tries to identify the importance of European Universities in promoting local and regional development under the circumstances of globalization and integration process into EU.
