Challenges and Benefits of Integrating BeiDou into Embedded Multi-GNSS SoC for Cellular & Mobile Consumer Platforms
Currently,BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) is partly operational as a global navigation satellite system (GNSS),and can continuously provide reliable and accurate positioning, navigation and timing (PNT) service in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) area. The global service is expected to be fully operational by 2020.Most recent results have shown that integrating BeiDou with other GNSS constellations including GPS and GLONASS can significantly enhance the performance of the positioning and navigation.BeiDou support is now a “must have” feature for the GNSS technology embedded in cellular phones for the Chinese market. To gain these benefits, some challenges must be overcome when integrating BeiDou into the embedded multi-GNSS System on Chip (SoC) for cellular and mobile consumer platforms, especially with the target requirements of low power, small size and low cost. This paper will discuss these challenges, including the aspects related to BeiDou Signal Structure; Signal Search,Acquisition & Tracking; Data Demodulation; Navigation Message; Navigation Algorithm; Power Optimisation. The paper will then demonstrate some of the performance improvements that BeiDou brings for a range of environments mobile consumer platforms typically experience on a daily basis.
