The outbreak of war against Japan in July of 1937 placed a substantial nationalist burden on vernacular fiction in the country.Almost immediately, powerful calls went out in major newspapers in China urging writers to work on behalf of the unity of the nation, producing works that would raise nationalist consciousness by vividly capturing the struggle now underway for national survival.
