The Epidemiology of Varicella Cases among Children Aged 3-15 in Beijing Fengtai District from 2008 to 2012
In Beijing, China, varicella vaccination had resulted in a dramatic decline in varicella morbidity and mortality since the 1-dose vaccination program was first introduced in 1995.In recently years, however, the number of breakthrough cases increased each year, and outbreaks continue to occur among highly vaccinated populations.Using data from the Immunization Information System (IIS) and the Infectious Disease Reporting System (IDRS), we have described the epidemiology of the varicella cases, compared the epidemiology between floating cases and permanent Beijing resident cases, and described the varicella outbreaks occurring from 2008 to 2012 in Beijing Fantail District. The results demonstrated that: 1.Whereas the estimated varicella annual incidence remained relatively stable during the year 2008 to 2012, the varicella breakthrough rate increased 3.80 times during these 5 years and showed an increased tendency (P<0.001);2.Among the children cases (age of 3-15), the proportion of the breakthrough cases in 2012(61.77%) was 1.86 times of that in 2008 (33.20%);the distribution of age (P<0.001), vaccination status (P<0.001) and epidemic nature (P=0.03) were significantly different between the cases of floating people and permanent Beijing resident;3.From 2008 to 2012, a total of 62 varicella outbreaks occurred in Beijing Fengtai District.Among the 787 children outbreak cases, 60.99% of cases were vaccinated cases, which was 20.04% higher than that of the sporadic cases (40.95%, P<0.0001).Altogether, results from this study indicated that 1-dose vaccination can not sufficiently control the outbreak of varicella and decreased the varicella incidence in Beijing Fengtai District. This study will provide useful information for promoting the implementation of a 2-dose varicella vaccination program in Beijing, China.
