Analysis and Simulation of Acoustic Channel Properties of Drill Strings
In order to develop a communication system that uses extensional stress waves in hollow steel drill pipe to carry encoded data between the bottom of well and the operator, it is necessary to know the time-varying channel acoustic properties of the drill strings in time.Based on the theory of the acoustic characteristic of the one knowing structure of drill string, the reflectionless acoustic transmission model(RATO)was established to form the bottom hole assembly(BHA).Thus, the acoustic properties of drill strings could be decomposed into the cascade of the RATO of single drill pipe owing to no reflection at the position of the model cascade.Firstly, the acoustic properties of one type of standard drill pipe were analyzed. Then the RATO of that drill pipe was built and simulated using the digital filter design. Finally, many RATOs were cascade to form a BHA.The simulation results showed that various complicated and long-distance communication channel could be easily assembled by the RATOs, especially suitable to the acoustic transmission channel with time-varying characteristics. The analysis of the RATO of drill tools and the simulation of acoustic drill strings channel provide both scientific theoretical and technical foundation for the research and manufacture of the acoustic telemetry instruments.
