Effects of Obesity on Dynamic Plantar Pressure Distribution in Chinese Prepubescent Children during Walking
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of obesity on dynamic plantar pressure distribution during walking.Fifty obese prepubescent children and fifty non-obese prepubescent children walked across the footscan platform at preferred speed while barefoot.Plantar pressure data were collected at 300Hz.Peak pressures and pressure rate were analyzed in ten different regions of the foot.Relative regional impulses were analyzed in three regions of the foot.SPSS 11.5 was used to determine statistical difference.Obese subjects displayed longer midstance duration and shorter propulsion duration compared to non-obese subjects (p<0.05).Significant increases were found in peak pressures under the metatarsal heads Ⅱ to V, mid foot (MF) and heel lateral (HL) (p<0.05), in time to peak pressures under the toe Ⅱ to Ⅴ, the metatarsal heads Ⅳ, Ⅴ and MF (p<0.05), and in pressure rate under the heel medial (HM) and HL for obese subjects (p<0.05).In addition, for obese subjects, arch index (AI) and the foot axis angle were significant larger (p<0.05), and MF of left foot, the midfoot and rearfoot of right foot experienced significantly higher relative regional impulses of contact with the plate (p<0.05).There were differences in foot balance parameters during the various subphases of foot-ground contact duration between the two subject groups and differences in balance in propulsion phase between feet in the obese group (p<0.05).It is postulated that the weaker walking stability, flatter foot pattern and plantar pressure distribution changes for the obese children may hinder them from participating in physical activity and therefore warrants further investigation.
