Characterization and Analysis of a Novel Nanofiltration Membrane for Sulfate Removal Applications

Chemical and physical characterization was conducted on the Synder NFS nanofiltration membrane, and its performance in two industrial sulfate removal applications was evaluated. The membrane was observed to have a MgSO4 rejection of 99.5% and a pure water permeability of 8.7L ·m2 ·hr-1 ·bar-1.Surface characterization confirmed a negative surface charge density, responsible for the high sulfate rejection, and a hydrophilic nature. When evaluated for its seawater sulfate removal capacity for use in waterflooding applications, NFS demonstrated both superior sulfate rejection and flux performance compared to another commercially-available sulfate removal NF membrane.Increased permeate flux for NFS was also observed for processing concentrated brine for the chlor-aikali process, which was found to be 20% greater than the other commercially available membrane tested in this study.
