Virtues and Relationships in the Mencius

Practical virtues are by and large exercised in relation to others;yet as the object of ethical judgement they belong to individuals. The Mencius displays both aspects of virtue, but it also has certain virtues predicated on natural and conventional relationships-parents and children, prince and minister, between friends. In some texts these virtues are taken as exemplary for the whole of morality;in others they are used in a more restricted sense.
