An Alternative of Ion Exchange Resins by Using Biowastes for Water Purification

Fossil resources are increasingly exhausted with the rapid development of mankind activities, and in the community all kinds of attempts are being carried out urgently searching for the alternatives to reduce or even replace it.In the hydrometallurgical industry and environmental field, separation of objective substances from the water by organic resins has become a traditional operation from long terms. In this present study, a meaningful attempt was proposed to make some contribution to realize this goal, which is based on such a severe fact, i.e., huge amount of biowastes were produced from the agricultural industry every year and gradually emerged as a troublesome problem in China, such as garlic peel, rice straw, orange juicing residue, stick bagasse and so on, and most of them were traditionally be treated by burning, causing the environment pollution and squandering of bioresources.Actually, these biowastes may be used to prepare the high quality biosorbents as the alternatives for ion exchange resins and apply to the separation processes. As an example, garlic peel was chosen in present study as the raw material to synthesize the various adsorbents by different processes, which all show quite good adsorption affinity with different toxic components in waste effluents, such as heavy metal ions, dye moleculus and fluoride anions.Their adsorption behaviour during the contact with the toxic water was evaluated, and meaningful results were obtained, proving the above-mentioned idea quite feasible and effective.Such study makes an attempt to develop various alternatives for the conventional organic resins and reduce the application of resins, saving the increasingly exhausted fossil wealth, and eventually may realize the purpose of completely replacing the organic resins in metallurgical and water-treatment industry.
