Novel application of fluorosurfactant in waterborne wood coatings
With increasing demand on reducing VOC in wood coating and finishes, the wetting, leveling, foam control, film tackiness, and surface repellency, such as dirt pick up resistance of water borne wood coating are becoming ever challenging tasks to waterborne wood coating formulators.Fluorosurfactants have long been used in low VOC latex architectural paints as multi-functional additives to simplify the formulation in these area, thus improves performances of the wood coating. In this paper, the functions of fluorosurfactants in waterborne wood coating are discussed in details. The testing result indicated that fluorosurfactant with low dosage provided best performance to reduce surface tension. They are excellent wetting and leveling agents which can reduce the need of common hydrocarbon and silicone based surfactants, thus reduce the use of defoamer. The fluorosurfactants has best anti-tackiness performance especially new product CapstoneTMFS-61.The addition of fluorosurfactants also can dramatically enhance oil repellency and improve the chemical resistance such as olive oil and 100-proof alcohol. Our study also showed that there is no recoating issue when using fluorosurfactant in waterborne wood coatings.
