Case Study Method in Business English Teaching: In the Chinese Context
Both researchers and practitioners in ESBP (English for Specific Business Purposes) teaching praise case study method for its real-world application and its ability to sharpen students” practical skills of language and business.Indeed, the case-based Business English teaching is now common and popular worldwide.However,this problem-based approach can pose great challenges in bilingual contexts,especially when the students are used to the transmission mode of learning, for which China is an example.Following an overview of general characteristics of case study method, this paper focuses on some typical problems and obstacles in application of this methodology in China”s Business English classes and how these obstacles can be overcome.Based on the investigation and research, the findings suggest the need for context-specific case methodology trainings both for the teachers and for the students,among which the pre-class preparation by the teacher, students” motivation, as well as adequacy of assessment measures are highlighted to the success of the case study method in Business English teaching in the Chinese context.
