Coal Mine Gas Safety from a Regulator”s Perspective
The mining regulator in Queensland has a critical role in setting the standards with respect to mining health and safety.With respect to underground coal mines there is no more critical task than the prevention of fires and explosions.This paper will cover the implementation activities of the regulator and its associated research facility Simtars following government inquiries following the explosions at the Moura No.4 and Moura No.2 underground coal mines in 1986 and 1994 respectively, where 23 miners lost their lives made a number of recommendations about gas management in underground coal mines.
