A coustical parameters other than the sound level for the evaluation of noise environments

A lot of acoustical indices have been proposed and standardized for the evaluation of noises in a building. However, these indices are basically depends on the sound pressure level of noise only. Therefore other acoustical parameters considering other hearing aspects should be investigated. The author reports some examples which use the acoustical parameters based on the existing hearing models. One is the psychoacoustical parameters whose frequency filtering is based on what the auditory pathway actually does.An example of the evaluation of refrigerator noises is introduced.Other is the parameters extracted from the autocorrelation and the interaural cross-correlation functions which can explain pitch, tone-to-noise ratio, spatial sensations, and their temporal fluctuations.Examples of the evaluations of toilet flushing and floor impact noises using these parameters are introduced.
