Experimental investigation of ice and snow melting process on asphalt solar collector
Travel is hazardous in the late fall, winter, and early spring, during periods of snow, sleet and freezing rain. One alternative method is currently interesting to make good use of asphalt pavements, airport runways as environmentally friendly solar collectors for the heating and cooling of adjacent buildings as well as to keep the pavements ice-free directly.A hydronic snow melting system has been established in field, which has the same mechanism with the asphalt solar collector. The experiments have been conducted to verify the feasibility of snow melting using asphalt solar collector and evaluate the effects of the heat exchanger on pavement temperature distribution. It is assumed that the 25℃ water from the solar collector is used for snow melting. The results of testing show that despite the entire snowrnelt time is longer than expected, it is acceptable for us to use asphalt solar collector for snow melting, the non-uniform temperature distribution was determined quantitatively and the average power input for snow melting is 305 W/m2.
