Numerical analysis of durability of a stucco exposed to the weather conditions of Poland

A mathematical model of hygrothermal performance of building materials, considering their deformations and damage caused by stresses induced by the temperature and moisture fields due to variable weather conditions, is briefly presented. The material damage is modeled by means of the nonlocal isotropic damage theory of Pijaudier-Cabot.The presented model takes into account the influence of material cracking on its permeability, which can be of importance for the external layers of a building envelope. The model considers also different mechanical and transport properties of the Inter-Material Transition Zone (IMTZ) between the stucco and wall material. The model equations are numerically solved by means of Finite Element Method for discretisation in space and Finite Differences for time integration. Some physical properties of the IMTZ between the cement stucco and cellular concrete were laboratory tested and used in our numerical simulations. The numerical results concerning stresses and hygrothermal performance of a cellular concrete wall, covered with the external cement stucco, exposed to the weather conditions of three different locations in Poland, i.e.Warsaw, Cracow and Kolobrzeg, are presented.Effects of the building location, wall orientation, as well as considering the IMTZ layer in the model of stucco layer are analysed and discussed.
