Crosslinking kinetics of polyethylene detected by rheological measurements
Crosslinking kinetics of high density polyethylene (HDPE) with 2,5-di(t-butyl peroxy)-2,5-dimethyl-3-hexane(DPDH) ranging from 0.1-1.0wt% was investigated by rheological measurements. Results indicate that a critical gel can be formed at the peroxide concentration of 0.2wt%, below which peroxide decomposition results predominantly long chain branching (LCB) formation. At peroxide concentration above 0.2wt%, however, crosslinking network can be expected. With the increasing of curing temperature, the crosslinking rate at the earlier stage accelerates while the equilibrium modulus at the fully cured stage is independent on temperature.Crosslinking kinetics up to the critical gel point at lower curing temperatures of 180 and 190℃ can be fitted well by Ding-Leonov”s model.
