Current,Concepts in management of Osteoporotic vertebral fracture Ibrahim Alsailamy

Purpose: to review the current concepts in management of Osteoporotic vertebral fracture. Methods: A retrospective literature review of osteoporosis, vertebral compression fracture, vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty clinical studies and experiences. Results: Osteoporosis Vertebral fractures often can lead to back pain, loss of height, deformity, immobility, increased number of bed days, and even reduced pulmonary function. Both methods vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty allow for the introduction of bone cement in to the fracture site with clinical results indicating substantial pain relief in approximately 90%of patients hence driving better life style & restoring patient self-esteem & dependency. Conclusion: in experienced hands,Percutaneous veretebral augmentation offers a minimally invasive approach to a painful osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture. When compared with conservative therapy, percutaneous vertebroplasty results in prompt pain relief and rapid rehabilitation. It is also proved to be a safe and effective procedure for treating acute osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures. On the other hand, kyphoplasty offers the possibility of lower pressures for cement introduction and the possibility of modest fracture reductions.
