Biobeds-a Swedish Contribution to Protect the Environment from Pesticide Contamination

The biobed is an effective, simple and low cost system to minimize pesticide contamination. It originated in Sweden as a response to the need for simple and effective methods to minimize environmental contamination from pesticide use, especially when filling spraying equipment,a typical point source of contamination.A biobed is a simple and cheap construction on farms intended to collect and degrade spills of pesticides by active microorganisms. The composition of the biomixture, which in the original Swedish model consisted of soil: peat: wheat straw, determines the efficiency of the system. While this implementation has sometimes led to modifications of the original biobed design into for example biofilters, biomassbed,Phytobac, biobac, biotables and biodeps. The technology has spread all over the world, and the lab and/or field studies on biobeds are done in Europe,America,Asia,Africa,Australia and New Zealand. The biobed technology is an important factor in the sustainable use of pesticides. The biobeds are an excellent example of how to use biological processes to deal with problems of contamination,an area called bioremediation.
