Effect of oral motor exercises and cognitive training on autistic children
Objective This study is aimed to observe the effect of language skill on autistic children with two methods: oral motor exercises and cognitive training.Methods 63 children with autism were randomly assigned to cognitive group (n=31) and exercise group (n=32).In the cognitive group,children received cognitive training while children received oral motor exercise in the exercise group.All children received attention span training and expression training.Both groups were assessed by CRRC edition of Sign-Significate relations (S-S) and scale of oral function.Results Both groups had significantly improved after treatment in cognition,oral expression,attitude of daily communication and organs of speech (P <0.01).The cognitive group was better in improving cognition and the attitude of daily communication (P <0.05) while the exercise group was better than the cognitive group in improving organs of speech and expression (P <0.01).All children in the exercise group improved labial such as “bmp” while 81.3% of them improved tongue on tooth ridge such as “d t l”.Conclusion Both oral motor exercises and cognitive therapy combined with attention span and expression had different effects to improve autistic children’s language skill.
