Hemp: A Sustainable Raw Material for Bio-based Composites and Resins

For more than 2000 years hemp has been an important raw material for industry.Hemp fibres were used for ropes, clothing textiles and paper. In the 1990s,hemp was rediscovered throughout the world as an important raw material for bio-based products in a sustainable bioeconomy.Hemp fibre is a sustainable natural fibre that can replace synthetic fibres in composites.Hemp oil can be converted into epoxy resin and further into acrylated epoxy resin.Combining hemp fibre and hemp resin can produce a fully bio-based composite. The conversion of biomass into useful materials, such as reinforcement fibres and resins in composites is finding increasing favour due to their perceived economic and environmental benefits.Using sunlight to grow hemp and the role of photosynthesis in consuming CO2 and requiring less energy compared to the petroleum based raw materials certainly enhances global sustainability.
