Game-Based Learning as Goal-Directed Participation: An Activity Theory Perspective

In this paper,we relate games to two conceptions of learning: goal-based learning and learning as participation.Next,we identify that there is a lack of theoretical framework for understanding learning as game-based,goal-directed participation.Appropriating Activity Theory,we propose a framework to address this gap,and illustrate it based on a reflection of game-play based on the framework. Finally,we discuss some implications designing and studying games in general, and games for learning in particular.
