Media Literacies and Information Literacies as MIL-What?
Media and information literacies (MIL) are gradually receiving due attention as the core skills for living in media-saturated world. But what are we talking about when we discuss on MIL?How do these concepts-media literacy and information literacy (「)-relate to each other?.Conceptual discussion is important for renewing concepts and more practically, for example, for developing policies on MIL.This paper suggests some thematic areas in which media and information literacies share a common ground and support each other. The discussion is based on the reported results of the Comparative Research on Youth Media Participation (2009-2011) which has focused on discovering ways of youth participation through media and the aspects of media and information literacies that young people are practising. These have been explored through questionnaires, interviews and media diaries among 11-to 18-year-olds in Argentina, Egypt, Finland, and India (state of Gujarat), partly also in Kenya.
The purpose of this study was to determine to what extent Chinese media coverage of tobacco issues in 17 Chinese cities comprises messaging known to motivate healthy behaviour
