Molecular Dynamics Simulation on Cratering Characteristics Induced by Hypervelocity Impact*
The process of crater formation induced by hypervelocity impact at various impact angles is explored by using molecular dynamics method. The crater formation is similar with the macro physical process.A melt region is generated around the crater and certain localized shear deformation emerges along the 45° direction out of the melt region. The radius of the melt region becomes smaller with the decreasing impact angle. The ejecta is partially ionized with an ionization percent about 1%, and the maximum is at the impact angle of 45° and the minimum at 90°.
